Upgrading the defense is part of the official loop, but costs, numerical effects, and an optimal upgrade sequence are not currently documented.

The current official description directly tells players to upgrade their defense.

Upgrades sit between placing towers and surviving waves and bosses, establishing a real decision area without proving a numerical build.
